3rd GUntur Medical GraduAtes Reunion (GUMGAR), Warrington, England, September 13, 2003.

I and Nagarjuna attended the third GMC alumni reunion ( GUMGAR : GUntur Medical GraduAtes Reunion) in Warrington in England. Over 60 plus alumni attended the reunion. Dr.Veeraswmy Popuri ( 1963) batch organized the get together. It was very nice to see several very young graduates of 1996, and 97 batches attending and actively participating in the reunion. It seems because of the shortage of physicians now PLAB Part I is being conducted in India itself and more and more alumni are coming to UK now. It was refreshing to hear some of their comments and ideas. Dr.Subbarao Chadalawada and Bapujirao Rao Velagapudi, and Ramesh Potluri organized the meeting.

We gave each alumnus the recent Alumni News letter we published recently, “ We Care” book, and “ Membership Data and Donation form”. I and Nagarjuna presented briefly about the origins of our organization, development of mission statement. We presented various projects, activities, Endowment Funds, CME presentations we have taken up recently. We also informed them of our thinking behind the Comprehensive proposals and paying patient wings at GGH.  Auditorium construction progress was shown and we encouraged donations from the alumni to the Auditorium and .suggested that they take up some projects. Quite a few alumni responded positively and several alumni donated £ 625 ($1000) and joined the list of donors to the auditorium. They also raised more money for different projects. (few thousand £ s) for undefined project at GMC/GGH. Several Alumni showed interest to present CME lectures when they visit India.

We invited all of their alumni to attend our 9th Biennial reunion and quite a few showed interest. They also invited GMCANA alumni to attend the AMGR ( Andhra Medical Colleges Graduates Reunion) that will be held in first weekend of May in England. We will inform all the details soon. We also offered them a free website (courtesy of Bapu Arekapudi) for their alumni and will disseminate their Alumni News also along with our News flashes.

A sumptuous dinner and excellent entertainment by local talent from the families of alumni added the touch to the get together. Special mention goes to exceptional talents of “ Meow Meowcry” Dr.Vivekanandamurthy Kadiayala whom some of you may remember when he participated and mesmerized the audience in Inter medical college competitions in Silver jubilee celebrations of GMC in 1971. I invited him to attend our 9th Biennial reunion and entertain us.

The ice has been broken between our two organizations and we will keep close relationship with them and work towards a common goal.

GMC and GGH conducted first ever BCS and ACLS course approved by AHA and conducted by AHA approved instructors from Apollo hospitals, Hyderabad and GMCANA was the proud sponsor of the project.

Report from Dr.R. Muralibaburao,

I am here with giving the detail report of the course with experiences of all of us. There were 4 no.of BLS ( Rs. 800/-)    43 no.of ACLS (Rs. 1800/-) participants registered.

This is the first our time that we could bring the staff, paramedics and doctors under one roof for training regarding BLS/ACLS course. This really gave for all of them the concept that giving BLS/ACLS for critically ill patients is a team work and they also the need for training the roles of team leaders as well as individual rescuers role. They shared their experiences at the valedictory function on the last day stating that they were very clear as to do what as a loan rescuers  are as a part of team of 2 or 3. I personally feel that this should become continuous process with regular monthly C.M.E. programe and practical demonstration for doctors, paramedics, staff and also other personal working in the Hospital which at a later date can extend to public education programes. It is a very nice that you are able to buy all the materials needed as you promised by phone. I feel that facing the new auditorium seminar rooms and guest rooms will be an excellent idea and the Apollo Hospital Instructors team which I feel is excellent can be repeated to do this programs for the time being until we are all set as a team. The feasibility of our place becoming an International Training Centre may be difficult at this point of time.  The certificates were distributed by Dr.Chiguripati Nageswara Rao and Dr.Nuthakki Venkateswara Rao our chief coordinator at Guntur.

Come Aboard by Ravi Tripuraneni:

The long cherished dream of GMCANA auditorium is becoming a reality. The original idea was conceived more than decade ago but for various reasons it wasn't nurtured. We have over come all the obstacles we had to face. The change in the political environment was extremely helpful to move on with the project. You can see the several construction pictures of the multi purpose auditorium being built on the campus of Guntur Medical College elsewhere in this newsletter, which are a testament to our commitment.

This state of the art 850 seated auditorium along with seminar halls, guest suites, a recreation area and CME/Multimedia center with computers and various audiovisual equipments is completely air-conditioned.   Our coordinators and building committee members are working very hard and diligently to make it as a crown jewel of our State. Our alumni have generously contributed and we are now at the final stage of fund raising and construction of the auditorium. All the donors who donated $ 1000 or more to the auditorium will be recognized by their names or their loved ones inscribed prominently inside the auditorium. List of the auditorium donors is published in the newsletter. However, this monumental project still needs more money. If you have already donated please accept our sincere ‘Thank you” on behalf of our mother institution that gave us the gift of education and please consider donating more to be able to complete the dream. All your donations are 100% tax deductible.

GMCANA is also donating various equipment to the state of the art Intensive Care unit with the help of Delta Rotary of Stockton at GGH which is taking is shape now.  Long needed two storied additional wing at Govt. Fever hospital is almost near completion and would add several beds and other facilities. We are also sponsoring American heart Association approved first ever held BCLS and ACLS courses at GGH.

Editorial:

You can assess the strength and success of an organization by the leaders who are also doers; members who actively contribute financially and are willing to give time; and communication between the executive members and with the general body with openness. As GMCANA has all three of these, its projects and goals are being and will be accomplished.

We need to explore less expensive options as we go along.

Dr. Sriharidas Kanuru visits GMC/GGH and sends this report: He visited GMC/GGH Guntur on November 23rd  2002

Dear friends,

Recent trip to our Medical College in November has been interesting and the best of my many visits in recent years.

I spent several hours in the college and hospital and had many meetings with different departments and visited the construction of Fever hospital building and Auditorium.

Dr. Nuthakki garu helped a great deal in scheduling the events and his help was beyond my appreciation. Mr. Nishant, our employee was with me all-day and very helpful and appeared very efficient and sincere. There are many things to report but I will emphasize matters of importance.

The construction of Fever hospital and Auditorium is progressing well. You might have seen pictures of them on our web. Those pictures were taken by our digital camera, which was donated by us. It will be very useful for the faculty to take the pictures for presentations.

Department of Pediatrics is much more enthusiastic now and looking for our help. We ordered three Televisions to be installed in Pediatrics department to entertain sick children and their bedside parents. Requests were made to provide central oxygen supply and pure and cool drinking water to those children. Our executive committee is considering their request. They are building a new floor for Neonatal care and it will be ready in few months.

Several Neonatal intensive care beds and needed equipment were obtained. Pediatric department requests are very genuine and essential to patient care and very good educational tools. Our executive committee mailed holiday greetings and requesting your help to raise the funds to meet the needs of helpless and sick children. I hope that our alumni will be generous to meet the challenge.

The 12 beds I.C.U is under construction and the plan appears very modern and should meet all the requirements of a good Intensive care. I am sure that you are aware that our alumni are providing all the equipment with the help of Rotary international and Dr.Babureddy Sagireddy ( 1983)

The most remarkable change is the acceptance of patients to pay minimum charges for the lab and new diagnostic tests. I don’t believe that there is any other way the state can afford to provide quality care. Public has to choose either no care or better care with affordable and reasonable cost. The establishment of hospital development society is the best thing ever happened to our health care in the state.

We bought books worth of Rs. 200,000.00 and donated to the library. It was the generosity of my classmates of 1960 batch and they set an example for other batches to meet the demands of our Medical school in the future. I am very thankful and proud of my friends.

They are conducting C.M.E regularly with our endowment funds. The continuing education and resuscitative care is still in primitive states and we may have to focus to help them. I hope that we may plan to achieve it in the near future as soon as our auditorium is finished. They may need our help to organize continuing education classes in different subjects.

Our goal is to help the education but not the daily needs of patients. The goal can’t be realized with out proper tools. We should diligently invest in certain diagnostic and educational tools to be effective and meaningful.

“Our auditorium is a body in an institution but it’s life and breath is education.” We should not rest till it survives with full life and vigor.

I am proud of our alumni and I hope that you share the same feelings.

Thank you immensely for all those that have sent the checks for the fundraising. If you have not send one please consider sending a small donation of $ 100 or more at the time of the holidays to share your joy with poor, sick children back home.

Please send the check in the self addressed envelope that was sent along with the greetings or mail to

MEMORY LANE

We are organizing a display of photographs from our past, our glorious college days at GMC.  Just imagine how much fun (not funny) you could have watching your friends and classmates as they were in their now forgotten youth.  The only way we could pull this off is if all of you contribute your best (in your opinion!) pictures for the show (and tell).  Any picture is fine, especially those that tell a story.  Dr. Uma Devi Gavini has kindly consented to take charge of this Memory Lane.  We promise to return the pictures intact either at the Reunion or by mail to you.  The success of the celebration of this Nostalgia is entirely in your hands.  The sooner you send the better is the display going to be.  The address is: 2015 Midwest Club, Oak Brook, IL.60523.  The phone number is: 630-986-8099.  Thanks.

Plans for our reunion are going on at a very rapid pace to make a memorable and enjoyable.  We sent a second mailing of registration forms and hope you all have received it.  We are also sending our reunion newsletter this week. If you did not receive the news letter in the next week means we do not have your accurate address in our database and please enter it in the Data Registration form in our website www.gmcana.org or email or postal mail it to Ravikumar Tripuraneni (ravi@tripurannei.com) immediately so we can include the information in the new Alumni Directory 2002 that will be printed and released at the time of Convention.

GUNTUR MEDICAL COLLGE ALUMNI OF NORTH AMERICA

  Alumni NEWS

SUCCESS ANY WAY YOU LOOK AT IT

(Summary of 8th Biannual GMC/RMC/AMC Alumni Reunion)

Think of the number of people attended, the amount of money raised, the quality and amount of food served, the ambience of the meeting venue, the unsurpassed service of the hotel employees, the cruise with highlight of fireworks, the quality of entertainment, the keynote speech, the Memory Lane, the Odyssey to Alma Mater, the variety of shopping, the quality of CME, the beautiful weather with the forecast of rain that did not materialize, even the absence of the threatened strike of the Hotel Workers' Union and look at it in any other way, our 8th Biannual Reunion is an unqualified success.

The first ever GMCANA Golf Outing was conducted at the Kemper Lakes PGA Course under the leadership of Dr. Nageswara Rao Latchamsetty. Several golfers enjoyed the day immensely.  Delicious lunch, and prizes later, added to the fun.

Everyone showed up on time in fine attire for the Cruise on Lake Michigan aboard beautiful 'Odyssey'. It was a total sell out.  An entire deck of 140 alumni had a great time with delicious food and entertainment including the mimicry of Premkumar Vindhya, entertainment by Santosh Kumar and jokes by Ramaraja.  It was pure pleasure watching the Chicago Skyline from the vantage point of Lake Michigan in gorgeous weather.  Fireworks at the end of the cruise added a feast to the eye.  For those not on cruise, pasta buffet dinner at the Hotel fitted the bill.  The D.J. entertained the crowd with music after the dinner.

Continental Breakfast followed a highly successful free Cholesterol Screening.  A very educational CME program was attended by most alumni.  Organized by Dr. Surendra Avula, the CME was not only instructive but raised unprecedented amount of money for the Reunion.

The spouses and members also flocked to the shopping area for browsing and later buying.   Jewellery, beautiful sarees and dresses, videotapes, trinkets etc. beckoned shoppers.  A Chinese Lunch in the same area provided the well needed break.  'Memory Lane', a pictorial display of our nostalgic past, courtesy of the hard work of Uma Gavani, separated the lunch area from the shopping area and brought joy and tears to the alumni.  At the same time continuous video shows of 'Odyssey to Alma Mater', chronicling a family's visit to GMC and GGH, added to the nostalgia.  Video shows of construction of the Auditorium provided the needed reassurance that the building is actually coming up.

A very productive General Body meeting followed lunch.  We had observed a moment of silence and paid respects to the recently departed Dr. Pinnamaneni Narasimha Rao, Dr. Challapalli Sambasiva Rao and Dr. Sankara Rao (Psychiatry).  Directory 2002 was unveiled by Dr. Nuthakki.  Update 2002 and President's address were presented.  Importance of sticking to our mission statement was emphasized.  Future projects were outlined.  A stirring speech by Dr. K. Anji Reddy, our Chief Guest ("My love to GMC is next only to the love of my mother") moved the audience so much that there is a spontaneous outpouring of donations for the auditorium.  A new team is elected with Ravikumar Tripuraneni as our next President.  Dr. Veeraiah Chowdary Perni is elected the Chairman of Board of Trustees.

All alumni dressed up in a short time for the Photo Session and enjoyed the company of their classmates for the pictures.  A grand finale of one picture of all the GMC alumni completed this session.  Indian snacks and drinks followed.  An unexpected highlight is the expertise of Bapu Arekapudi who served as the Photographer throughout the reunion and posted all the pictures on the GMCANA website in record time.

A sumptuous gala Banquet Dinner (all Telugu food) satisfied even the most critical customer in the audience.  Even the potential disaster of the 'Paayasam' being spoiled (the hotel employee put the servings under high temperature by mistake instead of warmer) turned into a blessing since a freshly made delicious Paayasam was served at the usual middle of the meal time of the classical Telugu dinner.

'Rangavalli', a variety show of song, dance, music, mimicry and comedy, regaled the spectators.  A special feature of this show is that all the items were presented by the alumni or their families and all the more enjoyable because of it.  Radhika Chimata (daughter of Kamala and Murthy Chimata) with her golden voice and great personality was such a hit that people were still dancing to her music at 2 a.m.!!  Who else could put together such a show but our own Ramaraja and Sulochana Yalavarthi?

Just when everyone thought they had indeed witnessed the climax, a surprise awaited them.  The Farewell Brunch in the most beautiful, so far unseen, room of the Hotel - the GRAND Ball Room floored the people.  The brunch itself impressed them too with Idli, Vada, Poori, Fruits, 'Kesari', coffee and 'Masala Chai'.  Fond Farewell indeed!!!

Sunanda and Prasada Rao Ravella (Convener) and Saraswathi and Venkata Subba Rao Uppuluri (President)pulled out all stops to make this reunion a grand success.  Tejanand Gowtham Mulpur, Nagarjuna Reddy Ponugoti and Satish Dasari (Co-Convener) worked very, very hard.  Many, many others contributed immensely.  Thanks to all of them and also to the organizing committees of RMC and AMC who joined us in our reunion.

(More information will follow in the next news flash)

PS: Pictures of the reunion were posted in our website at  http://photos.gmcana.org  and click on the Biennial reunion, Chicago Hilton section .  Please click on the thumbnails to enlarge each picture. if you have dial up modem the pictures may download slower.
